Sutton, WV 2009
Mark Riermaier – Chicago, IL
I am sending you a short description of a trip I took. In 2009, I took a trip to West Virginia from my home in suburban Chicago. Coming from the flat farmland of the Midwest to the hills and mountains of the Appalachians is a huge thrill. Although I spent most nights camping, I did have a late afternoon with temperatures in the 40's and decided to look for a room. I stopped in Sutton (which is in Braxton county) near I-79 and RT 15. I was hoping I wouldn't have to pay to stay at a chain motel. I was lucky to come upon the Elk Motel which at the time was 35 bucks a night. In the morning I noticed an official looking state sign that pointed to a dam. With the morning fog lingering I thought maybe I'd kill some time and check it out. It was certainly worth a look as it's a good size dam. It's worth a detour if you're in the area.
Lots of great riding in WV, especially in the fall.
From the other side. Nice effect with the morning mist.
Another view from below.
Time to find a room.
Home for the night.
